IKO Driveway & Pavers: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide
If you have an IKO driveway or paver system that’s cracking, sinking, or separating, the fix usually lands on replacing the failed section and re-compacting the base beneath it. In Sacramento, IKO-compatible paver driveway repair and replacement typically runs $7,000 – $18,000 for a full installation, with smaller repair sections priced by square foot. Most failures show up after heavy rain or our freeze-thaw cycles, when water has worked its way under the pavers and washed out the sand bedding.
You’ll usually notice it first as a paver that rocks underfoot, then a low spot where water pools, then a run of pavers that have drifted apart along a seam. By the time it’s visible, the base has already shifted. We stock IKO-compatible pavers and the right bedding sand on our trucks for most Sacramento neighborhoods, so the repair typically gets priced and scheduled in one visit.
Which IKO Models This Applies To

Most IKO driveways we see in Sacramento fall into two lines: the interlocking concrete paver series and the larger-format slab pavers used for walkways and patios. The interlocking units are the ones that fail most often, because the locking lugs on the edges wear down or crack over time. Once a lug goes, the pavers stop holding each other in place, and the whole section starts to drift.
To identify what you have, flip over a loose paver and look for a stamped code on the underside. IKO units are typically marked with a two-letter series code and a mold number. Measure the paver’s width and thickness with a tape measure before you call anyone. A 60mm paver and an 80mm paver look close from above, but they are not interchangeable in the same field. If your pavers are older and the stamp is worn off, bring one to our shop or send a photo, and we’ll match it.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question, IKO-series pavers are still being produced, but the color lots shift year to year. A brand-new OEM paver from a different lot will often look noticeably different from your sun-faded originals. We often recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent that we can color-blend to the existing field, especially on repairs where a clean patch matters more than a perfect brand match.

Signs Your IKO Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Rocking or wobbly pavers. A single paver that tips when you step on it means the sand bedding under that unit has washed out. This is the earliest warning sign, and it’s the cheapest point to fix before the base starts eroding.
- Water pooling in low spots. When the gravel base settles unevenly, you’ll see puddles that linger after a Sacramento rain. That standing water works down through the joints and accelerates the erosion underneath.
- Widening gaps between pavers. If the joint sand is gone, pavers drift apart. You’ll see gaps wider than a quarter inch. At that point, the field is no longer locked together, and the damage spreads quickly.
- Sunken or heaved sections. A low area near the garage apron or a raised ridge mid-driveway means the base has failed. Clay soils in Sacramento expand and contract with moisture, and without a proper crushed rock base, pavers move with it.
- Crumbling edges on individual pavers. The edges are the weak point on an interlocking paver. Once you see spalling (the surface flaking away along the edge), water is getting into the paver itself, and that unit is done.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a full IKO paver driveway replacement in Sacramento, plan on $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, the condition of the existing base, and whether we’re reusing any of the old pavers. A repair that addresses one failing section typically runs $1,200 – $4,000, which includes removing the affected pavers, re-compacting the base, replacing the bedding sand, and re-setting the units with new joint sand.
What drives the range up: a driveway that was built without a proper crushed rock base, drainage work that needs to be added, or a paver size that has been discontinued and requires color-matching. What keeps it down: a base that’s still structurally sound and a clean removal. Every quote we give is a written, line-item price before any work starts. The number we hand you on day one is the number on the invoice, and the repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely lift out a loose paver, check what’s underneath, and add joint sand to narrow gaps. That’s a homeowner-level fix that takes an hour and costs under $30. What we would not recommend is trying to re-level a sunken section by adding sand on top of a failed base. That fix lasts one season, and the pavers will settle again as soon as the Sacramento clay shifts.
The real work on a failed paver driveway is in the base, not the pavers. Getting the crushed rock compacted properly, setting the slope for drainage, and re-locking the field so it stays put through a wet winter takes equipment and experience. If your pavers have moved more than a half inch, call us at (279) 300-1177, and we’ll come out and give you a straight read on what’s actually going on underneath.
FAQs

IKO concrete pavers in Sacramento typically last 25 – 35 years when installed over a proper compacted base, but the sand bedding between them needs touch-up every 3 – 5 years. Our clay soil and summer heat shorten the lifespan compared to coastal climates, so expect to address joint sand and edge settling more often here. Call (279) 300-1177 if you’re not sure whether your pavers just need maintenance or a full reset.
A paver with a hairline crack can usually stay in place if the base under it is still solid, but a paver that’s cracked through the full thickness or spalling at the edges needs to be swapped out. Replacing a single unit is a half-hour fix if we have a color match. If you can see the crack running down the side of the paver, that one’s done, and we’ll match it as close as the current lots allow.
Most IKO paver repairs in Sacramento take one to two days, including removal, base work, and re-setting the pavers with fresh joint sand. A full driveway replacement runs three to five days depending on square footage and whether we’re hauling away the old base. We’ll give you a written arrival window before the crew shows up, and we keep the job site clean as we go.
We stock IKO-compatible pavers, bedding sand, and joint sand at our Sacramento shop, and our trucks carry the most common sizes for same-visit repairs. If your pavers are an older series or a discontinued color, we’ll source a field-matched equivalent and bring samples before we set anything. We’re an independent contractor, not affiliated with IKO, and we also carry parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on the remodeling side of the business.
