Belgard Kitchen Remodeling: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

If you have Belgard pavers, wall block, or outdoor kitchen components tied into your Sacramento kitchen remodel and something has failed, we can source and install the correct replacement parts, usually within a week of diagnosis. A full Belgard-integrated kitchen remodel in Sacramento runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on layout complexity, cabinetry line, and whether you’re replacing countertops, flooring, or structural elements. Most owners discover a problem the same way: a paver has shifted near the kitchen entry, a countertop seam has separated where it meets an outdoor pass-through, or the original installer cut a corner on substrate prep and the failure shows up within eighteen months.

We’re Penhallow Remodeling Sacramento, a general contractor that handles kitchen remodels involving Belgard hardscape transitions, and we’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Belgard directly. Trevor Nash runs our Sacramento operation, and he’s spent years watching badly prepped substrates fail behind pretty finishes. That’s the problem we solve most often.

Which Belgard Models This Applies To

Here’s the compatibility reality with Belgard: their product lines are not universal, and mixing series is the fastest way to create a visible seam or a structural weak point. The Belgard Catalina paver line, for example, uses a specific joint width spec that doesn’t match the Belgard Mega-Arbel or Arbel stone dimensions. If your kitchen has a Belgard paver floor or an outdoor kitchen transition, you need to confirm the series name from the original invoice, or measure a full paver and match it against Belgard’s current spec sheet. The pavers themselves are typically stamped with a lot code on the underside when new, but that wears off within a few years of foot traffic and California sun.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Belgard manufactures their own pavers and wall block, so there’s no true “aftermarket” equivalent for the hardscape pieces themselves. What we do stock, however, are the companion materials: polymeric sand matched to Belgard’s recommended joint width, edge restraint systems, and the cement board substrate used where Belgard hardscape meets an interior kitchen floor. The aftermarket decision applies to the remodeling components around the Belgard product: Schluter transition strips, Nobleseal waterproofing membrane, and Laticrete thinset all work with Belgard transitions when specified correctly.

One compatibility gotcha we see in Sacramento regularly: Belgard pavers used indoors as a kitchen floor need a different underlayment than the same paver used outdoors. Exterior installations rely on a compacted aggregate base. Interior installations need a concrete slab or properly rated wood subfloor with an uncoupling membrane, otherwise the grout or joint sand fails within the first year. If your installer put pavers directly over plywood, that’s your failure point.

Signs Your Belgard Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Hairline cracks running across multiple pavers near the kitchen entry. This usually means the substrate beneath the pavers has settled unevenly, or the original installer skipped the compacted base. California’s expansive clay soil in areas like East Sacramento and Land Park expands and contracts with seasonal moisture, and that movement telegraphs straight through the hardscape.
  • Joint sand washing out or disappearing between pavers. Polymeric sand fails when water gets trapped beneath the surface or when the wrong sand was used for Belgard’s specific joint width. You’ll see ants moving in first, then weeds, then the pavers start shifting.
  • A visible height difference where the Belgard floor meets your kitchen cabinetry or interior tile. This is a planning failure, not a product failure. Proper transitions require a flush line to be set before the cabinets go in, and retrofitting one after the fact is disruptive and expensive.
  • Efflorescence, a white chalky film, blooming across the paver surface. This is mineral salts wicking up through the paver when moisture is trapped underneath. It’s more common in Sacramento’s hard-water areas and shows that drainage under the paver bed is not working correctly.
  • Grout or seam separation where a Belgard paver meets a countertop or island base. Different materials expand and contract at different rates, and without a proper flexible transition joint, the seam will crack. This gets worse with Sacramento’s wide temperature swings between summer afternoons and winter mornings.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

A Belgard-integrated kitchen remodel in Sacramento runs $14,000 – $45,000. The spread is driven by four things: how much Belgard hardscape is involved, whether the substrate underneath needs to be torn out and rebuilt, what cabinetry and countertop lines you choose, and how much structural work the transition points require. A smaller kitchen with minimal Belgard transition work lands around $14,000. A full gut with paver flooring, island rebuild, new cabinetry, and countertops pushes toward $45,000.

We write the price before any work starts. Not a range, not a verbal ballpark, a written number you can hold us to. That number includes parts, labor, substrate prep, haul-away, and the written guarantee. Every job also carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. No service call fee, no re-inspection fee. The Kingswell Way, which we’ve operated under since 2004, requires that the price on day one is the price on the final invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things an owner can safely check before calling us. First, look at whether the joint sand is eroding: if it’s just cosmetic loss, re-sanding is a weekend job for a patient homeowner. Second, check whether water is pooling anywhere near the Belgard transition after rain: standing water tells you the drainage plan failed, and that’s useful information for us to have when we quote.

What you should not do is pry up pavers to “look at what’s underneath.” If the substrate has failed, pulling pavers loose without the right edge restraint and base material risks spreading the damage, and once the interlock is broken, the entire section needs to be rebuilt. You might also damage the pavers themselves, and matching Belgard’s current dyed-lot color to a paver manufactured five years ago is nearly impossible. If you’re seeing structural cracks or shifting, call us at (279) 300-1177 and we’ll come look at it. The estimate is free, and you’re not obligated to do anything with it.
