Oldcastle Home Additions & ADU: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

If you’re planning a home addition or accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in Sacramento and working with Oldcastle building materials, the installed cost typically runs $45,000 – $130,000 depending on square footage, foundation work, and finish level. Most Sacramento homeowners discover a problem the same way: a hairline crack in the exterior stucco, water staining at the roofline, or settling at the corner of the slab that wasn’t there last spring. We stock and install Oldcastle-compatible block, pavers, and retaining wall materials, and we match existing Oldcastle colors and textures so the new work doesn’t look like a patch job. If your addition is framed, we work with the concrete, masonry, and hardscape components. If you’re looking at a failed paver or a cracked CMU wall, call us at (279) 300-1177 and we’ll tell you what it’ll take to fix it right.

PenHallow Remodeling Sacramento is an independent remodeling contractor. We’re not affiliated with Oldcastle, but we work with their products regularly and know how they behave in Sacramento’s climate.

Which Oldcastle Models This Applies To

Oldcastle makes a wide range of building products under a few different brand umbrellas, and the compatibility question depends on which one you have. For additions and ADUs, the most common Oldcastle products we handle in Sacramento are:

  • Oldcastle concrete block (CMU) – standard 8″ and 12″ block used for foundation walls, stem walls, and freestanding garden walls.
  • Oldcastle pavers – including the Holland, Brussels, and Cobble collections, used for patios, driveways, and walkways around the new structure.
  • Oldcastle retaining wall block – the Anchor and Belgard-compatible lines used when an addition on a sloped Sacramento lot requires a stepped wall or grade change.
  • Oldcastle precast products – lintels, sill blocks, and cap units that finish the top and openings of masonry walls.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners miss: Oldcastle block dimensions are nominal, not actual. An 8″ block is actually 7-5/8″ tall and 15-5/8″ long, and the face texture varies by plant and production run. If you’re repairing a wall and buy a block from a different lot, the color and texture won’t match. We check the original block’s profile against the current Oldcastle offerings before we order, and we photograph the wall so we can match the coursing exactly.

For OEM versus aftermarket: Oldcastle concrete products don’t have a meaningful “aftermarket” equivalent the way a faucet cartridge might. It’s poured concrete, aggregate, and pigment. The quality difference comes down to manufacturing consistency and cure time, both of which Oldcastle handles well. When a repair needs a structural block, we use Oldcastle or an equal product that meets the same ASTM C90 compressive strength spec. For decorative pavers, we stay with Oldcastle because their color blends are pigmented through the full paver thickness, not just on the surface.

Signs Your Oldcastle Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

  • Vertical cracks at wall corners or above lintels. This is usually thermal movement or a missing control joint. Clay soil in Sacramento expands and contracts with seasonal moisture, and if the original wall didn’t have a joint every 20 feet or so, the wall will crack where the stress concentrates.
  • Horizontal cracks in a CMU foundation wall. This is a structural red flag, not cosmetic. It means the soil behind the wall is pushing harder than the block can resist. In Sacramento’s expansive clay zones, like parts of Natomas and Rosemont, this is more common than people expect.
  • Settling or sinking pavers around the new addition. If the patio slopes toward the house or individual pavers have dropped, the base layer underneath has failed or was never properly compacted. Water follows the low spots and makes it worse every winter.
  • Efflorescence (white chalky film) on block or paver surfaces. Moisture is moving through the concrete and depositing salts on the surface. It’s often cosmetic, but persistent efflorescence means water is getting in somewhere it shouldn’t be.
  • Loose or rocking retaining wall caps. The adhesive bond has failed or water has gotten behind the wall and frozen-thawed in the winter enough to dislodge the cap. Sacramento doesn’t get hard freezes often, but it doesn’t take many cycles to break a masonry bond.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A garage converted into a guest room and home office

A full home addition in Sacramento runs $45,000 – $130,000 depending on scope, and an ADU runs $90,000 – $220,000. But if you’re here because a specific Oldcastle component failed, here’s what you’re likely looking at:

  • Paving or walkway replacement: $3,500 – $11,000 depending on square footage and base repair.
  • CMU retaining wall rebuild or repair: $4,000 – $18,000 depending on height, access, and whether the wall needs an engineered footing.
  • Foundation crack repair: $400 – $3,500 depending on the crack width, depth, and whether epoxy injection or full section replacement is needed.
  • Masonry cap and lintel replacement: $600 – $3,000 per opening depending on access and material matching.

These numbers include materials, labor, debris hauling, and any permit fees that apply. We give you a written price before we start, not a verbal range you have to trust. The number on your proposal is the number on your invoice, and the work is backed by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails inside a year, we return and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a line between what’s safe to inspect and what’s dangerous to attempt. You can absolutely walk your addition’s perimeter, check for new cracks, photograph anything that looks different, and keep an eye on whether doors or windows are starting to bind. That’s useful information for us. The dangerous part is when a concrete block wall is structural and someone tries to cut out and replace blocks without shoring the load above. A block wall under load can shift suddenly, and we’ve seen footer failures drop a section of wall without warning. Masonry work on a load-bearing wall is not a weekend project. If the wall supports roof framing or floor joists, call us at (279) 300-1177 before you touch it. A free estimate costs nothing, and we’ll tell you honestly whether the problem is structural or cosmetic.
