Boral Bathroom Remodeling: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Boral-compatible bathroom remodeling materials throughout Sacramento, with most full bathroom renovations using Boral products running between $9,000 and $28,000 depending on the size of the space and what’s being replaced. If you’ve got a Boral tub, shower pan, or wall system that has cracked, delaminated, or started pulling away from the studs, we can usually get eyes on it within a couple of days and give you a written number before any work starts. Most Sacramento homeowners discover the failure the same way: they notice a soft spot underfoot near the tub, see the wall panel separating at a seam, or find water staining on the ceiling below the bathroom.
Penhallow Remodeling Sacramento is an independent remodeling company. We are not affiliated with Boral, but we work with their product lines regularly and know where they hold up and where they fail.
Which Boral Models This Applies To

Boral’s bathroom products fall into a few main categories: acrylic and solid-surface tub and shower surrounds, tile backer boards, and exterior trim that occasionally makes its way into bathroom window surrounds. The compatibility question that matters most is whether you’re working with Boral’s Builders Series panel systems or their solid-surface wall panels, because the two use different trim kits and different sealants at the seams.
Here’s the gotcha we see regularly in Sacramento: the Builders Series panels are thinner than the solid-surface line, and using a standard replacement trim piece from a big-box store leaves a visible gap at the corner joints. Homeowners will sometimes buy the wrong trim, silicone the gap, and then we get called six months later when the caulk has failed and water has gotten behind the panel. If you’re matching a part, look for the Boral stamp on the back of a removed panel or on the underside of the tub lip. It’ll have a series code that tells us exactly which trim and sealant to order. If the stamp is gone, we measure the panel thickness and the edge profile to identify it.
For Boral tile backer board, the OEM sheet is dimensionally stable and works well in Sacramento’s dry climate, but we’ve replaced sections where improper fastener spacing caused the board to flex and crack the tile above it. The spec range on fastener spacing runs 6 to 8 inches on-center depending on the board thickness, and missing that by even a half-inch shows up as cracked grout within a couple of years.
When it comes to replacement parts, we recommend OEM Boral trim and panels where the product is still in production. The tolerances matter at the seams, and aftermarket equivalents we’ve seen don’t always match the exact contour of the factory panels. If Boral has discontinued a color or profile, we’ll tell you that plainly and help you decide between a partial replace that’s close enough or a full surround replacement that matches.

Signs Your Boral Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Soft spots in the floor around the tub or shower base. This usually means water has been seeping past a failed seal at the panel seam or tub lip. The subfloor is wicking moisture and starting to delaminate.
- Wall panels pulling away from the studs at the corners. Boral panels expand and contract slightly with Sacramento’s seasonal temperature swings, and if the original installer over-tightened the fasteners, the panel edges lift.
- Persistent mildew or staining at the panel seams. Silicone caulk at Boral seam joints has a working life of roughly 5 to 8 years in a humid Sacramento bathroom, and once it lets go, water gets behind the panel and feeds mold.
- Cracked or popping tile over Boral backer board. This points to a fastener spacing issue or a lack of thinset coverage behind the tile. The tile is the symptom; the backer board is the problem.
- A sudden musty smell you can’t track down. That odor is usually mold growing in the cavity behind a Boral panel that’s been letting water in for months. By the time you smell it, the repair has moved past a simple caulk job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Sacramento homes, a Boral bathroom remodel typically runs $9,000 to $28,000. The number moves based on whether we’re replacing a single panel and resealing the surround, doing a full tub-to-shower conversion, or gutting the entire bathroom down to the studs. A smaller job like replacing a Boral tub surround and redoing the trim kit usually lands on the lower end. A full bathroom gut with new Boral backer board, tile, vanity, fixtures, and a walk-in shower with a Boral solid-surface pan pushes toward the top of that range.
Every Penhallow job includes a written price before work starts. That number covers the parts, the labor, the tear-out, the disposal, and the finish work. If something changes mid-job, we stop and put the change in writing before we move forward. You get a 365-Day Done Right Promise on every bathroom remodel we do. If the work fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing too.
We source our fixtures from Kohler, Moen, and Delta, and countertops from Cambria, Silestone, or Caesarstone when the job calls for them. You’ll see those brands named on the written estimate, not vague phrases like “quality materials.”
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can safely check yourself. Run your hand along the seam where a Boral panel meets the tub deck or shower base. If the caulk is cracked, peeling, or has pulled away from either surface, that’s a visual sign water has a path in. You can also press gently on the wall panels near the bottom corners. If they flex more than a quarter-inch, the panel has likely pulled off its fasteners or the backing board is compromised.
We don’t recommend trying to replace a Boral tub surround or shower pan yourself. The panels are heavy, they need to be trimmed precisely to fit your stud layout, and the seam sealing has to be done in the right order with the right product or you’ll be redoing the whole thing in two years. The same goes for tile over Boral backer board. Getting the fastener spacing and thinset coverage wrong means cracked tile and water damage down the line. If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, call us at (279) 300-1177 and we’ll come take a look. The estimate is free, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a caulk-and-go repair or a full panel replacement.
FAQs

Boral solid-surface panels and backer boards typically last 20 to 30 years when installed correctly, but the sealant at the seams needs replacement every 5 to 8 years in a high-humidity bathroom. Sacramento’s dry summers actually help here, because the panels dry out between uses instead of sitting damp.
Small hairline cracks in Boral solid-surface panels can sometimes be repaired with a color-matched acrylic filler, but any crack that runs through the full panel thickness or sits at a seam means water has likely reached the substrate behind it, and that panel needs to come out. Call (279) 300-1177 and we’ll tell you which situation you have.
A full Boral tub or shower surround replacement typically takes 3 to 5 working days from tear-out to final caulking. A complete bathroom gut with new Boral backer board, tile, and fixtures runs 2 to 3 weeks depending on the scope. We’ll give you a defined arrival window and a written schedule before we start.
We keep common Boral trim kits, sealants, and fastener systems on our trucks, and we order model-specific panels and pans from our Sacramento-area suppliers, which usually arrive within 3 to 5 business days. If you need us to verify compatibility with your existing Boral model, we do that at the free estimate visit.
If your Boral bathroom is showing signs of failure, don’t wait for the water damage to spread. Call Penhallow Remodeling Sacramento at (279) 300-1177 and we’ll schedule a free estimate, put a written number in your hand, and explain exactly what’s included. Tell me what you want the room to feel like, and I’ll tell you what it actually takes to get there.
