Sakrete Driveway & Pavers: The Sacramento Owner's Guide

Sakrete driveway and paver projects in the Sacramento area typically cost $7,000 – $18,000 installed when we’re working with paver systems, and $4,500 – $12,000 for poured concrete using Sakrete bag mixes or bulk delivery. We stock Sakrete-compatible materials and can usually schedule a site visit within the week to measure, price, and get your project on the calendar. Most Sacramento homeowners call us after the first serious rain: hairline cracks from summer heat expand in winter wet, a paver edge starts sinking where the sand base washed out, or a car tire leaves a permanent impression in a softened edge course.

We’re an independent Sacramento contractor, not affiliated with Sakrete, but we work with their bag mixes, color hardeners, and joint sands every month. You don’t need to know exactly which Sakrete product was used on the original pour. You need someone who can look at what’s failing and tell you what it actually takes to fix it without replacing more than necessary.

Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete makes bagged concrete, high-strength repair mortars, polymeric joint sand, and paver base materials rather than assembled parts, so “model numbers” work a little differently here than they do for a dishwasher or garage door opener. What matters is the specific Sakrete line you’re working over or repairing against.

The three you’ll most often see on Sacramento driveways and patios: Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix (the 4,000 PSI standard, gray bag), Sakrete Crack-Resistant Concrete Mix (has fibers, better for slabs with tree-root pressure from valley oaks), and Sakrete Paver Set Polymeric Sand (the joint filler for paver driveways). If your bag says 5,000 PSI or countertop mix, that’s a different conversation.

Compatibility gotcha most owners miss: Sakrete Crack-Resistant doesn’t mean fissure-proof. It resists shrinkage cracking as it cures. It does not bridge existing cracks in an old slab. If you pour new Sakrete over a moving slab edge without an isolation joint, the new material cracks along the old fault line within two seasons. We see it every spring in Land Park and East Sacramento, where mature tree roots push and the clay soil expands.

For paver work, Sakrete Paver Set is fine as a joint filler, but the base underneath – crushed rock, compacted in lifts – matters more than the sand itself. That’s the layer that fails first in Sacramento’s clay-heavy soils. We won’t put new polymeric sand over a base that’s already moving; you’d pay for the same repair twice.

Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Are Failing

  • Hairline cracks running in a loose web pattern across the slab. This is shrinkage from the original cure, common with any concrete, and largely cosmetic. Real trouble starts when cracks widen past 1/8 inch or one side sits higher than the other – that’s slab movement, not surface wear.
  • A paver edge course sinking or tipping outward. Sacramento’s clay soil shrinks in summer and swells in winter. Without a proper edge restraint (plastic or concrete), the outer pavers shift first. Once the edge is gone, the field of pavers follows.
  • Polymeric sand washing out of paver joints. You’ll see small channels or voids between pavers after rain. The sand did its job for a while, but if water is pooling or running through the base, it’ll keep eroding. Refilling joints without fixing drainage is temporary.
  • Standing water that wasn’t there two years ago. Slabs and paver fields settle unevenly with root growth and soil compaction. Water puddling means the pitch (the slight slope that directs water off the surface) has flattened or reversed somewhere.
  • A dull hollow sound when you tap the concrete with a broom handle. Concrete that rings like a drum has debonded from the base underneath. That void will crack under vehicle weight sooner or later.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how pricing works for Sakrete work in Sacramento, and I’ll keep it in plain numbers:

  • Paver driveway installation: $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, base depth needed, and paver style. Repairs to an existing paver field (edge restraint, re-leveling, new joint sand) usually run $1,500 – $4,500.
  • Concrete driveway replacement or new pour with Sakrete mixes: $4,500 – $12,000. A full tear-out and re-pour of a failing driveway lands on the higher end, and Sacramento demolition and hauling costs account for real money.
  • Driveway sealing: $250 – $700 for a standard two-car driveway, and it’s worth doing every 2 – 3 years in our sun.

Every Penhallow job starts with a written price before any work begins. Not a verbal range and not an estimate that flexes after demo day. We walk the site, measure the square footage, note the soil conditions and drainage, then put a number in front of you that stays the number. The written quote covers materials, labor, base preparation, hauling, and cleanup. And the work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and make it right at no charge. That promise is in writing on every job, no exceptions.

DIY or Call Us?

Concrete and paver work isn’t like swapping a faucet. There’s no high-tension spring or electrical hazard here, so I won’t tell you it’s dangerous in that way. But it is expensive to get wrong. The most common DIY mistakes we repair: base rock that wasn’t compacted (the pavers survive one winter, then sink), concrete poured without control joints (the slab cracks randomly within a year), and joint sand applied over a wet base (the sand hardens into a crust and fails in patches).

What you can safely do: clean the surface, pull weeds from joints, look at where water runs during the next good rain, and measure the crack widths with a dime. What you shouldn’t do: pour concrete over a moving slab edge and hope for the best, or re-sand a paver driveway without checking the base underneath. If you’re not sure which problem you have, call (279) 300-1177 and we’ll tell you straight. Tell me what you want the driveway to feel like underfoot, and I’ll tell you what it actually takes to get there.
