Sterling Kitchen Remodeling: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide

We install and complete Sterling kitchen remodeling projects throughout Sacramento for homeowners whose Sterling components have reached the end of their useful life or simply don’t fit the way the kitchen works anymore. A full Sterling kitchen remodel in Sacramento typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 depending on cabinet line, countertop material, and whether we’re moving plumbing or electrical. Most owners reach out because something specific gave out first: a drawer front cracked at the hinge, a cabinet box swelled from a slow sink leak, or the laminate surface delaminated near the dishwasher vent. What starts as one failed part usually becomes a conversation about whether to patch the old kitchen or replace it once, correctly.

Note: Penhallow Remodeling Sacramento is an independent general contractor. We are not affiliated with Sterling or its parent company, but we work with Sterling cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures regularly and know how they’re built, where they fail, and what it takes to match or replace them in Sacramento homes.

Which Sterling Models This Applies To

New painted shaker cabinets with an organized deep drawer

Sterling built its name on mid-range kitchen cabinetry and bathroom fixtures, but the kitchen side of the line includes several cabinet families you’ll still find in Sacramento houses from the 1990s through the mid-2010s. The most common lines we see are the Sterling Reflections series (framed cabinets with ½-inch plywood boxes and maple or oak face frames), Sterling Essentials (their budget line, often particleboard boxes with thermofoil doors), and Sterling Estate (their step-up line with soft-close hardware and deeper drawer stacks). If you don’t know which line you have, open a lower cabinet and look for a small sticker on the inside wall of the drawer box or on the back of a door. The model number usually starts with a three-letter prefix followed by four digits.

The compatibility gotcha most Sacramento owners hit is this: Sterling changed hinge spacing between the Reflections and Estate lines, so a door from one series won’t hang right on the other even if it measures the same. We always match the replacement part to the series, not just the measurements. For cabinet boxes and doors that are no longer manufactured, we have a local supplier who makes custom European-style cabinet doors in Rocklin, and we size them to the existing face frames so you don’t have to buy a whole new cabinet run. That’s a real money saver when just the doors are shot but the boxes are still square.

Signs Your Sterling Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Swollen or split cabinet boxes near the sink base. Sterling cabinet boxes (especially the Essentials line) are particleboard, and particleboard doesn’t recover from water. A slow P-trap drip over six months turns the bottom panel into something that crumbles when you press it. Once the box loses structural integrity, the doors sag and the countertop loses support at the front edge.
  • Thermofoil doors peeling or yellowing. The heat from a dishwasher drying cycle or a self-cleaning oven degrades the vinyl thermofoil layer over time. We see this constantly in Sacramento’s older homes along Fair Oaks Boulevard and in Tahoe Park, where original Sterling kitchens are still in service. Peeling thermofoil can’t be re-adhered cleanly.
  • Hinges pulling out of the face frame. Sterling used 35mm cup hinges on most doors, and after a decade of daily use the screws wallow out the holes. Wood filler and longer screws buy you six months. Replacing the hinge with a beefier Blum or Salice unit, or rebuilding the face frame, is the real fix.
  • Drawer slides grinding or sticking. The original side-mount slides on many Sterling drawers were nylon-roller units. Once the rollers crack or the track bends, the drawer chatters and won’t close square. We can fit new soft-close undermount slides to most Sterling drawer boxes, though the drawer sides sometimes need a shim pack to sit right.
  • Countertop laminate lifting at the seams. Sterling offered post-formed laminate countertops on many kitchen packages. Sacramento’s dry summer heat plus steam from cooking eventually loosens the adhesive bond at the front edge and at the miter seams. Once water gets underneath, the particleboard core swells and the repair becomes a replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A stone counter, tile backsplash and open shelf after a kitchen remodel

A complete Sterling kitchen remodel in Sacramento runs $14,000 – $45,000. Here’s what moves the number:

  • Cabinet scope: If the boxes are sound and we’re replacing doors, drawer fronts, hinges, and slides only, you’re at the lower end. If we’re pulling cabinets to the studs and reconfiguring the layout, add $8,000 – $18,000 depending on kitchen size and cabinet line.
  • Countertop material: Laminate starts around $2,000 installed for a typical Sacramento galley kitchen. Quartz runs $4,500 – $6,500. Natural stone lands between or above, depending on the slab.
  • Plumbing and electrical changes: Moving a sink or adding an island with power means opening walls, adding circuits, and pulling permits. That’s typically $3,000 – $8,000 on top of the finish work.
  • Backsplash and fixtures: $800 – $2,500 for tile work, plus whatever you spend on faucets and lighting.

Every kitchen remodel we do in Sacramento comes with a written price before work starts, a written 365-Day Done Right Promise, and a line-item breakdown so you can see where the money goes. The number we hand you on day one is the number on the final invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Some things you can check yourself without risk: whether cabinet doors are out of square because a hinge screw backed out, whether a drawer just needs the slide clips re-seated, or whether a musty smell is coming from a leaking P-trap you can see and reach. Replacing a hinge or a drawer slide is doable for a handy homeowner with a screwdriver and a tape measure.

What we’d caution against is pulling cabinets, cutting countertops, or relocating plumbing as a DIY job. A countertop seams poorly cut leak at the seam and water gets into the cabinet run over months, and by the time you see it, the damage is done. Removing a cabinet also means knowing what’s behind it: electrical runs, plumbing vents, structural blocking. We quote the work straight, show up when we say we will, and stand behind it for a year. If you’d rather hand it off, call (279) 300-1177 and we’ll schedule a free estimate.
