Tuff Shed Driveway & Pavers: The Sacramento Owner’s Guide
If your Tuff Shed is sitting on a cracked, sinking, or washed-out driveway or paver base, the fix usually means tearing out the failed section and rebuilding the substrate (the compacted gravel and sand layer under the pavers) before relaying the surface. In Sacramento, paver driveway installation around a Tuff Shed or detached structure typically runs $7,000 – $18,000 depending on square footage, access, and whether we’re replacing the base or just the surface. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: a corner of the shed starts dropping, the doors won’t close square, or water pools against the floor plate after a wet winter.
We’re Penhallow Remodeling Sacramento, an independent remodeling and hardscape contractor, not a Tuff Shed dealer or affiliate. We work on the ground under and around your shed. That’s the part Tuff Shed doesn’t cover once the structure leaves their lot.
Which Tuff Shed Models This Applies To

Every Tuff Shed sits on some kind of base, whether it’s a Premier Pro Series barn, a Premier Series gable shed, or a smaller garden storage model. The shed itself doesn’t have a “driveway part” in the catalog sense, but the pad it rests on is a structural component. If the pad fails, the shed fails. That’s the part we’re matching: pavers, base rock, edge restraint, and drainage specific to your model’s footprint and door swing.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners don’t know: Tuff Shed floor joists are typically spaced for a level, continuous bearing surface. If your pavers heave even three-quarters of an inch across the width of the shed, the floor frame starts bridging gaps it wasn’t engineered for. That’s when you get creaking floors, doors that bind at the top corner, and eventually rot where the skids sit in standing water. The fix isn’t shimming the shed, it’s rebuilding the base so the load spreads evenly.
For the surface itself, OEM doesn’t apply the way it does with, say, a KraftMaid cabinet door or a Cambria countertop. Tuff Shed doesn’t manufacture pavers. What matters is the material spec: we use Belgard and Unilock pavers rated for vehicular or structural loads, not the thin landscape pavers sold at big-box stores. The difference is thickness (60mm minimum for light vehicle traffic, 80mm where you’ll park a truck) and the base depth underneath (4 – 6 inches of Class II road base in Sacramento’s clay soil, more if we’re dealing with standing water).

Signs Your Tuff Shed Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Shed floor feels springy or soft at one corner. That’s the floor frame flexing over a void where the base has settled or washed out underneath. The paver surface can look fine while the real failure is six inches below.
- Water pools against the shed after rain. Sacramento’s clay soil expands and contracts with moisture, and if the paver bed wasn’t graded away from the structure, water sits against the floor plate and wicks into the framing.
- Doors stick or won’t latch in winter, then loosen up in summer. Seasonal ground movement under an undersized base shifts the shed just enough to pull the door frame out of square. This is a foundation problem wearing a door problem’s clothes.
- Pavers along the shed edge are tilting outward or sinking. Edge restraint has failed or was never installed. Once the outer row drops, the pattern starts walking outward and the load path changes.
- You see ant mounds or eroded channels between pavers. Ants excavate the sand bedding, and water follows the voids. Both remove support from under the shed’s perimeter, which is exactly where the weight concentrates.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For a small approach pad beside a garden shed, you’re looking at the low end of the $3,500 – $11,000 paver patio range. For a full driveway extension that carries vehicle traffic up to a larger barn-style unit, expect $7,000 – $18,000. The spread depends on three things: square footage, whether we’re hauling out an old concrete slab or just a tired paver bed, and the depth of the base we have to rebuild.
Every paver or driveway rebuild we price in Sacramento is a written number before we move a single stone. That number includes demolition of the failed section, haul-off, base rock and compaction, sand bedding, pavers, edge restraint, and a skim coat of joint sand to lock everything together. If we find rot at the bottom of your shed’s floor frame once the pavers are pulled, we’ll stop and show you before touching anything, and the change order is in writing. The work carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the base settles or the pavers shift inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s not a verbal comfort statement. It’s in the contract.
Sacramento Pavers & Driveway Pricing
- Paver patio or shed pad, small (up to 300 sq ft): $3,500 – $8,000
- Paver driveway extension, standard two-car (up to 600 sq ft): $7,000 – $14,000
- Full paver driveway, larger properties: $12,000 – $18,000
- Base repair only (pavers re-laid, no new material): $3,000 – $7,000
- Concrete driveway alternative: $4,500 – $12,000
- Asphalt driveway (where preferred): $3,500 – $9,000
If you’re pricing us against other Sacramento contractors, ask whether their number includes haul-off and base rebuild. A lot of bids look cheaper because they’re quoting a surface layer over whatever base is already there. Surface over a failed base is a repair that fails again, and you already know what that costs.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely do the diagnostic walk yourself. Check the shed door gaps with a level, watch where water sits after rain, and probe the paver edge with a pry bar to see if the sand under the outer course has washed out. That’s worth ten minutes and it tells you whether this is a surface refresh or a structural base failure.
What you don’t want to do is pull pavers from under a loaded shed without shoring the floor frame first. The shed’s weight sits on the pad. Yank the support out from one corner and the frame drops, the wall racks, and suddenly a $4,000 base repair is a $12,000 shed rebuild. We’ve seen it happen off Meadowview Road and off Fair Oaks Boulevard. If the pavers are failing at the shed’s perimeter, call (279) 300-1177 and let one of our background-checked, uniformed crews assess it before anyone digs. Estimates are free, and you’ll get a written number whether or not you hire us.
FAQs

A properly built paver base in Sacramento should last 25 – 30 years before needing anything beyond joint sand and occasional leveling, but that assumes the base rock was compacted to at least 95% density and the pad was graded to shed water away from the shed. Failures we see at the 5 – 8 year mark are almost always undersized base, no edge restraint, or drainage that was never addressed. Call (279) 300-1177 if your pavers are failing early and we’ll tell you exactly what’s missing.
Yes, if the failure is isolated to one section and the base under the rest of the pad is still compacted and draining. We can cut out the failed area, rebuild the base in that section, and re-lay the pavers so the pattern matches. If the base across the whole pad was thin from day one, spot-repair just moves the problem a few feet over, and we’ll tell you that before you spend the money.
Most Tuff Shed driveway and paver replacements in Sacramento take two to four working days, including demolition, haul-off, base rebuild, compaction, and laying the surface. Rain in the forecast stretches it, because compacting wet clay base locks the problem in. We’ll give you a defined arrival window before we start and we’ll hold to it.
We stock Belgard and Unilock pavers in the most common Sacramento colors and sizes, along with Class II road base and concrete sand, on our trucks as standard service inventory. If you want a specific paver style or color that falls outside stock, we order it direct and the lead time is usually under a week. Alongside pavers, we also regularly work with materials from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone on the remodeling side, so we’re set up to handle projects that extend beyond the shed pad.
Trevor Nash and our crew have been rebuilding shed pads, driveways, and patios across Sacramento long enough to know that the base matters more than the pattern. Tell me what you want the room to feel like, and I’ll tell you what it actually takes to get there, same goes for the ground under your shed. Call (279) 300-1177 for a free estimate and a written price before any work begins.
